Zeus

According to Greek mythology, Zeus is the king of the gods, the ruler of Mount Olympus, and the god of the sky and of the thunder. He was the child of Cronus and Rhea. And was th youngest in the family. The symbols for Zeus were the oak, eagle, thunderbolt and bull. As soon as he was born he was hidden in a cave by his mother to keep Cronus, his father, from swallowing him as he had done to their previous children. Cronus had heard that one of his children would overthrow his throne and replace him. So to avoid this, Cronus swallowed his children as soon as they were born. Rhea hid Zeus in a cave on Mount Ida in Crete , then wrapped a rock into baby’s clothes and Cronus swallowed it, thinking that it was Zeus. Rhea later gave Cronus an herb which made him regurgitate the other children and the rock. Some reports also say that his brother Poseidon was also hidden and Cronus was given a baby horse in his place to swallow. Other reports say he was swallowed too so it is not known which story is true.

Zeus was married to Hera, who was also his older sister, but he also had many lovers or consorts. It was reported that he was the father of Aphordite and her mother was Dione. Other famous offspring were, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Persephone, Dionysus, Perseus, Heracles, Helen, Minos, Ares, Hebe, and Hephaestus, Jupiter, and Tinia. Some of his lovers were Mnemosyne, Demeter, and Dione.

Zeus is called the god of the daytime or Sky Father, or Jupiter. Zeus presided over the Greek Olympian pantheon. He was featured in many of his offsprings local cults. He had a wide range of authority. Although he was the god of thunder and sky, he was also the supreme cultural artifact and in some cases, the embodiment of Greek religious beliefs and also the archetypal Greek god.

There are many different stories about who raised Zeus. He was said to be raised by Gaia, he was raised by a goat named Amalthea, he was raised by a nymph called Adamanthea, He was raised by a nymph named Cynosura, He was raised by Melissa, or he was raised by a shepherd family under the promise that their sheep would be protected against wolves. It doesn’t matter so much who raised him because he still became the king of the gods.

Zeus and his brothers and sisters overthrew Cronus and the other Titans. The combat was called the Titanomachy. The Titans were then put in the Underworld region called Tartarus.
