Greek Gods

Greek and Roman Gods continued

There were many Greek and Roman gods in the history of the Greeks and Romans. They basically worshiped the same gods, they just went by different names, depending on how the names were translated in each language. The first Greek god was known as Chaos. Chaos was a dark abyss with no forms of life and nothing but silent darkness. Chaos created the Earth (also known as Gaea, Gaia, or Mother Earth) and Eros. Gaea created Uranus (the Sky or Heaven), mountains, rivers, lakes, seas, and lowlands. Gaea and Uranus lay together and gave birth to the 12 original Titans, 3 Clyclopes, Brontes, Steropes, heady Arges, and 3 Hecatonchires.

Some of the many Greek and Roman mythological gods were:

Greek Name Roman Name Greek Name Roman Name Zeus Jupitor, Jove Eros Cupid Hera Juno Persephone Persipina Poseidon Neptune Demeter Ceres Hades, Polydectes Pluto Dionysus Bacchus Pallas Athena Minerva Pan Inuus Phoebe Diana Selene Luna Aphordite Venus Eileithyia Lucina Hermes Mercury Eos Aurora Ares Mars Boreas Aquilo Enyo Bellona Zephyr Favonius Hephaestus Vulcan Notus Auster Hestia Vesta Eurus Eurus

This is just a few of the many Greek and Roman Gods. The Greeks did have some gods that the Romans did not worship and visa versa. Some of the Roman gods that were not worshiped by the Greeks were, Terminus, Priapus, Pales, Sylvanus, Saturn, Janus, Pomona, Flora, Voluptas,Libitina, and Juventus.

Some of the Greek gods that were not worshiped by the Romans were, Hymen, Hebe, Iris, Aether, Aeolus, Pontus, Nereus, Triton, Ate, Nemesis, Hespera, Morpheus, and Fama.

These gods as well as all of the others ruled over certain tasks which when all put together controlled, weather, life, and the earth, moons, stars, and the heavens. Some of the tasks appointed to gods and goddesses were, god of the sun, guardian of boundaries, goddess of fertility. Goddess of the hearth and home, god of sleep, goddess of fortune, god of dreams, god of fame, goddess of pleasure, goddess of punishment, goddess of flowers, god of the deep sea, god of light, goddess of dawn. There was a mythical god or goddess for every single thing in life. The Greeks worshiped these gods and goddesses and depicted statues, urns, and other symbols for each of them. Many of the Greek and Roman statues and other items have been destroyed over the years but there have been many replicas of them made and sold. The stories of the gods and goddesses are very interesting and there is a lot information to be found in books and online. Pick your favorite god or goddess and do a little research. There is an interesting story about each one of them.
