The Greek Gods

Greek and Roman Gods

There were many gods and goddesses that both the Greeks and the Romans worshiped. There were also some that each worshiped separately. The names of the gods may have differed from Roman to Greek but they represented the same gods and goddesses. Both the Greeks and the Romans worshiped many gods and goddesses. They thought alike in that there was a god or goddess for nearly every aspect of life.

Some of the same gods and goddesses which were worshiped by both the Greeks and the Romans were:

Zeus (Roman name- Jupiter or Jove), was the Lord of the Sky, Gods, and Thunder

Hera (Roman name Juno), was the protector of Marriage

Poseidon (Roman name was Neptune), was the Ruler of the Sea

Hades and Polydectes (Roman name was Pluto and Libitina), was the God and Goddess of the Underworld

Pallas Athena (Roman name was Minerva), was the Goddess of the City, Education, Science, and War

Phoebus Apollo (Roman name was Apollo), was the God of Sun, Truth, Music, and Healing

Aphrodite (Roman name Venus), was the Goddess of Love and Beauty

This is just a few of the many gods and goddesses who ruled the universe in ancient Greek and Roman times. According to the Greek mythology, in the beginning there was only Chaos. Chaos was a dark abyss like nothing. There was no sound, no light, no forms, and no sign of any life. Chaos created the Earth (also known as Gaea, Ge, Gaia, or Mother Earth), and Eros (or Desire), and Uranus (Father Heaven, Ouranos, the Sky, or the Heavens). Gaea gave birth to Pontus (the seas), Ourea (the mountains) on her own, then she married Uranus and they gave birth to the first 12 Titans, the 3 Cyclopes, and the 3 Hecatonchires. The Titans were the first gods and goddesses of the world and there were 6 males and 6 females. The Cyclopes were giants with one eye in the middle of their foreheads. They were mean but had a great talent for making things from metal. The Hecatonchires were giant creatures with 50 heads and 100 arms. The Cyclopes and the Hecatonchires helped Zeus when the time came to conquer the Titans during the War of the Titans.

The names of the Titans were, Cronus (became ruler of the gods after overthrowing Uranus), Tethys, Oceanus, Crius, Coeus, Lapetus, Hyperion, Themis, Phoebe, Mnemosyne, Rhea, Cronus, and Theia. Their children became the first generation of Olympians, who later overthrew Cronus and Zeus then became the ruler of the gods and goddesses. Each god and goddess had a task to rule over and make sure it was carried out. There was a god or goddess for every aspect of life from the moon and stars to every feeling and happening in the human world.
