Greek Philosophers

Some of the most popular Greek philosophers of all time was Aristotle and Socrates. These philosophers have given us a clear line of influence to the modern philosophers and science. Philosophers who existed before Socrates were mainly ontologists and they rejected the ideas and stories about the Greek myths. They did not believe that it was the way things began. The Permenides was one of the first philosophers to give an opinion on this and his were one of the first documented logical arguments known. Heraclitus claimed that the only thing that doesn’t change and perish is change itself. These philosophers tried to figure out what exists, where it came from, what it comes from, how it exists, and how multiple natural objects could be explained. For thousands of years before Archimedes figured out the laws of equilibrium, there had to have been some principles and thoughts which continued until today. If not for all of the minds wondering and thinking about the how, why, when , and where of everything, we would still not know anything today about any of it.

Socrates was an Athenian philosopher and he believed that a person should try to do well. He also believed that each person should know themselves. Socrates taught many other famous Greek philosophers. One of his most famous students was Plato. It seems that Socrates taught and discussed ideas which upset many people so he was given a choice to leave Athens for good or to be put to death by drinking a poison. He chose to drink the poison and some think this may have been because he didn’t want to leave his home. Socrates did not write anything down so most of his beliefs and ideas came from Plato. During the reign of the Thirty Tyrants, Socrates was threatened many times but he survived in spite of his continued protests for democracy. Ironically, after democracy was declared, he later lost his life because the people felt that he was corrupting their children.

Aristotle, also known as Aristoteles in Latin, Aristote, in French, and Aristotele, in Italian. He was born on March 7, 384 B. C. And died in 322 B. C... Along with Aristotle, Plato was the other philosopher considered to be the two most influential philosophers, as far as Western thought goes. These two had many works which were connected in many ways. They each had their own style and substance in their works.

Plato wrote many philosophical dialogue arguments in the form of a conversation, and a few letters. The conversations were usually with Socrates, his teacher. Aristotle was one of Plato’s students. Aristotle was a great thinker and philosopher and was known as “The master” by Avicenna.
