Greek Myths

There are many Greek myths which have been translated into other languages so everyone can enjoy reading them today. There is a vast amount of information about them on the internet. The Greek gods and goddesses are described in detail as well as their stories and lives. The Greek myths have been translated by several different people over the ages so there are different variations to some of the stories and the different names and Greek gods and their families. There is a question mark as to who some of the parents of some of the Greek gods or goddesses were. Some of them are said to have been born to different mothers and fathers than in another version. One can only read them and decide for yourself what, if any of it, you may believe.

The Greeks named their gods and goddesses and there were many. There was a god or goddess for every aspect of the universe and of life itself. There were gods and/or goddesses for the moon, sun, sky, rainbow, rain, thunder, lightening, stars, the Earth, the Underworld, the mountains, the seas, oceans, springs, and lakes, the fields and flowers, the home and hearth, virginity, humans, death, and even gods and goddesses for the feelings a human had. There was gods for pain, love, hate, fear, thought, and any other feeling a human had.

As the story begins, according to Greek mythology, there was only Chaos. Chaos was a dark nothing, much like an abyss. There was no sound, no light, no forms, no living thing. Chaos then created the Earth (also known as Mother Earth, Gaea, Gaia, or Ge), and Eros (Desire). Gaea then gave birth to Tartarus ( the Underworld), Uranus (also known as the Sky, Ouranos, The heavens, or Father heaven), Pontus (the Sea), and Ourea (the Mountains) by herself without uniting with anyone else. Gaea then married Uranus and they gave birth to the original 12 Titans, The 3 Cyclopes (giants with one eye in the middle of their foreheads), and the 3 Hecatonchires (giants with 50 heads and 100 arms). Of the 12 Titans there were six males and six females. Some of them paired up and married and two of them, Lapetus married a nymph named Clymene, and Themis was seduced by her nephew, Zeus. The other Titans were Ceous, who married Phoebe, Crius married Mnemosyne, Hyperion married Theia, Cronus married Rhea, and Oceanus married Tethys. The children of these Titans became the first generation of Olympians.

Cronus overthrew his father, Uranus, and became the ruler of all gods until Zeus overthrew Cronus and became the ruler. Both of the stories about how this came about is very interesting.
