Greek Gods and Goddess

There were many Greek gods and more than one goddess that were worshiped in ancient times. According to Greek mythology, there was only one god in the beginning there was nothing but Chaos. Chaos was only a dark abyss with no form of life. It was just a vast emptiness with no sound or light. The god Chaos created Gaea (otherwise known as Gaia, Mother earth, or Earth), Eros (Desire), Desire cancelled every logical thought or act. Gaea gave birth to Uranus (the Heaven), Pontus (the Sea), and the mountains, rivers, seas, oceans, and lowlands.

As the story goes, Gaea married Uranus and together they had the original 12 Titans, 3 Cyclopes (named Brontes, Steropes, and Argus), nymphs, and 3 Hecatonchires (creatures with many heads). It seems that Uranus was afraid the children would overthrow him as ruler of the gods, and he was also disappointed in their looks, so he put them deep inside Earth (Gaea), in the deepest pit of Hades, called Tartar. Gaea was in a lot of pain and also very angry because she was tired of laying with Uranus every night. She begged her children to help her castrate Uranus and the only one who agreed to help her was her son, Cronus (there are other versions of this story). Gaea made a sickle for Cronus and when Uranus came down to lay with Gaea, Cronus cut off his testicles. This action separated him from Gaea and from that day on the earth and Sky were not connected.

The 12 Titans were Okeanos, Koios, Krios, Hyperion, Iapetus, Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Tethys, and Cronus. Some of the other main gods and goddesses were, Aphrodite, Apollo, Ares, Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Dionysus, Hephaestus, Hera, Hermes, Hestia, Poseidon, Zeus, Asclepius, Charites, Dioscuri, Eileithyia, Eros, Hebe, Heracles, Horae, Leto, Moire, the Muses, Nike, Tyche, Atlas, Nyx, Charon, Erinyes, Hades, Hecate, and Persephone.

Not all of the gods and goddesses lived on Mount Olympus. Some of them lived on Earth and also within the earth. The inside of the earth was known as the Underworld and the gods and goddesses in charge of it were Hades, Charon, Erinyes, Hecate, and Persephone. There were gods and goddesses who ruled the oceans, seas, earthquakes, weather, dark, light, love hate, home & hearth, and every aspect of life.

The gods and goddesses were divided into several different categories. There were the Main Gods I, which were the Olympians, the first generation of Olympians. The Main Gods II were the second generation of Olympians. The Main Gods III were the Titans, and the Main Gods IV were the Primeval gods and goddesses, and the Main Gods V were the gods and goddesses of the Underworld.
