The Greek Gods

Greek Gods Roman Names

The Romans also had names for the Greek Gods. There were many Greek gods and goddesses according to the Greek Mythology. The myths of the Greeks were translated by several different translators so their opinions of the meanings and spellings of some of the names and incidents will vary. There are different stories about how some events took place so one just has to believe what he want to believe and decide who he wants to believe about what happened. The Greek made up the myths in order to try to figure out how the world was created.

It is believed, by the Greeks, that in the beginning, there was only the god known as Chaos. Chaos was just a dark abyss which had no signs of life or form and was a silent dark, nothing. Chaos then created the Earth (also known as Gaea, Ge, Mother earth, or Gaia) and Eros (Desire). Gaea then gave birth, by herself, to Uranus (the Sky), Ourea (Mountains, and Pontus (Sea). Then Gaea married Uranus (the Sky) and together they had the 12 original Titans, The 3 Cyclopes, (giants with one eye in the middle of their foreheads) and the 3 Hecatonchires (creatures with many heads or hands). The 12 Titans consisted of six males and six females. Their names were, Ceous, Phoebe, Crius, Mnemosyne, Hyperion, Theia, Oceanus, Tethys, Cronus, Lapetus, and Themis. From these came the Olympian gods and goddesses and this was just a few of the many gods and goddesses which ruled the world and made all things happen.
