The Greek Gods

Great Gods Zeus

According to ancient Greek Mythology, there were many great Greek gods and goddesses. The ancient Greeks believed there were gods and goddesses who controlled and ruled every little and big aspect of life. There were gods or goddesses named for everything. There were gods of the seas, such as Poseidon. He was the ruler and main god of the sea and he had other gods of the sea under him. Some of the others were, Nereus, Proteus, Glaucus, and Phorkys.

There were Greek gods for the sky, earth, and underworld. Then there were gods and goddesses for things like, desire, love, hate, fear, etc. There were gods or goddesses for the home and hearth, wealth, flowers and fields, wine, merriment, the sun, the moon, death, and war, just to name a few. If there was a way of life or a thought, there was a god for it.

There were main gods who controlled the other gods to make sure their orders were carried out and things happened as they planned for them to. There were gods who fought other gods in order to take control of others. There are many stories about these Greek gods and goddesses and a lot of information can be found online or in your local library. Whether you believe these stories or not is up to you, but they do make for some very interesting reading. It is not unlike watching some of the movies we have seen in the past about the Greeks and their gods and goddesses.

There are also many replicas of the Greek gods and goddesses and they can often be distinguished by their costumes they wear and their symbols that they carry or are seen with. Some examples of this are, Zeus was often seen with a thunderbolt, eagle, and oak. Apollo was seen with a bow, lyre, and laurel. Ares carried a spear, Artemis carried a bow and was seen with a deer, Athena was seen with an aegis, owl, and an olive tree. Poseidon was often seen with the trident, horse, and the bull. Each god or goddess is represented with their own symbol or symbols but some of them often were seen with one of the same symbols so sometimes it was hard to figure out which god or goddess it was meant to be.

Some of the main Greek gods and goddesses who stood out most in history were, Zeus, Gaea, Aphrodite, Artemis, Apollo, Demeter, Hera, Hermes, Poseidon, Athena, Dionysos, Hades, Cronus, Rhea, and many more. In the beginning it seems that there was only Chaos. Chaos gave birth to Gaea (the Earth), Eros (desire), and Nyx, and Uranus (the Sky). Gaea married Uranus and gave birth to the 12 original Titans, which in turn gave birth to the Olympians. These were all gods and goddesses and ruled different parts of existence.
