Egyptian Mythology

Ancient Egyptian mythology was from which the beliefs, cultures, and religions came from. Egyptian mythology was the religion of the Egyptians. Egyptian mythology was the unorganized combination of ancient myths, nature worship, and many gods. The creation of the earth is explained from these factors, as the Egyptians believed it to be.

According to the Egyptian mythology, only the ocean existed in the beginning. The Ra (the sun) came out of an egg (according to some it came out of a flower), and appeared on the surface of the water. Ra then gave birth to 4 offspring. The offspring were the gods, Shu and Geb and the goddesses, Tefnut and Nut. Shu and Tefnut became the atmosphere and they stood on Geb, who was the earth, and raised up nut, who became the sky. Ra was the ruler of them all. Geb and Nut had two sons named, Set and Osiris, and two daughters, Isis and Nephthys. Osiris succeeded Ra as the king of the earth and was helped by Isis, his sister and wife. It was believed that Set hated his brother and he killed him. Isiris embalmed her husband’s body, with the help of the god Anubis. Anubis then became the god of embalming. Isis resurrected Osiris with her charms and he became the king or god of the Netherworld, which was the land of the dead. Osiris and Isis later had a son named, Horus, who defeated Set in a great battle and then became the king of the earth.

The ennead were created from conception of the first kings and their descendants. The ennead was a group of nine divinities and the triad, father, mother, and son. Each church had its own ennead and triad. The greatest ennead was Ra and his children and grandchildren. This group was worshiped at the Heliopolis, which was the center of sun worship. The beginning of the local gods is unclear but is believed to be taken from other foreign religions and from the original animal gods of prehistoric Africa. They were all gradually put into a very complicated religious structure. Other important gods in Egyptian mythology were, Amon, Thoth, Ptah, Khnemu, Hapi, and the goddesses were Hathor, Mut, Neit, and Sekhet. The ennead of Memphis was headed by the triad of Ptah (father), Sekhet (mother), and Imhotep (son). Ptah became one of the greatest gods during the Memphite dynasty and one of the greatest gods in Egypt.

The Egyptians were represented with human bodies and human or animal heads. Ra had the head of a hawk and Hathor had the head of a cow. Anubis had the head of a jackal and Mut had the head of a vulture. Thoth had the head of an ibis and Ptah had the head of a human.
