Constellation Mythological Phoenix
The constellation of the mythological phoenix was named by the Johann Bayer and first appeared in 1603. The word phoenix is a Greek word for dark red, purple, or crimson. The phoenix bird was given its name because of its color. According to different cultures, the phoenix bird was very beautiful although some depicted it as ugly and old. It may be viewed by different cultures with the shape of a peacock, a stork, a flamingo, and other shapes, depending on the culture and myth.
It was believed, by most, that the phoenix was a beautiful bird and had a beautiful voice when it sang. The bird is said to have lived a long time. It is written that they lived for 500 years. When they reached the end of their life they would build a nest of twigs and herbs, then set it on fire, and burn itself up in the flames. Then from the flames would appear a new young phoenix. The phoenix is associated with life, immorality, and rebirth. It is worshiped by many cultures and also appeared on Egyptian and Roman coins.
The Phoenix constellation is one of the constellations which can be seen on the Southern hemisphere. It appears as a large bird which is rising into the air. The Arabs recognize this constellation as “The Boat”. It has also been known as an eagle, or some other type of bird. This may be why Bayer decided to give the constellation the name of a bird, even if it is a mythical one. Whether it is a mythical bird or not, it is still recognized by many cultures. Other cultures recognize the Phoenix constellation as The Eagle, The Griffin, The Fire Bird, and the Young Ostriches.
The Phoenix bird is also mentioned in the Christian beliefs and was known as the Bennu bird. It is believed by some that it actually may have represented the palm tree, or the sand. It seems that the word had three different translations by the early translators of the Bible.
The Phoenix was worshiped by the Greeks, the Chinese, the Egyptians, the Persian, American Indians, the Jewish, New Zealand, and many more. The Phoenix is used in emblems, coins, names of sports events and teams, and other uses. Some still worship the Phoenix and believe in reincarnation and resurrection. For whatever reason it is worshiped, it has a widespread meaning for many different countries and to have a constellation named after it is a great honor to some people and means a lot to them. There are also many other gods, which are worshiped by some cultures, also have constellations named after them.
