Coeus
According to Greek Mythology Coeus (sometimes written as Koios), was the Titan of intelligence. The Titans were the giant sons and daughters of Gaea (also known as Gaia or Mother Earth), and Uranus (or known as the Heavens, the Sky, or Ouranos). These two gave birth to 12 Titans plus nymphs, other giants or monsters, and Cyclops. Coeus was one of the first 12 Titans on Mount Olympus. Uranus was the ruler of these gods until they overthrew him and Cronus then became the ruler of the Titan gods.
With his sister Phoebe , who was the Titan of Brilliance and the Moon, he fathered Leto and Asteria. Leto slept with Zeus (son of Titans Cronus and Rhea) and gave birth to Artemis and Apollo. Coeus was overthrown by Zeus as was some of the other Titans. Ceous is known by the Romans as Polus.
The brothers and sisters of Coeus (or the original 12 Titans) were, Cronus, Rhea, Phoebe, Oceanus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, Theia, Themis, Mnemosyne, and Tethys. Cronus and his mother, Gaea, plotted to castrate Uranus because Gaea was tired of bearing children and also she did not want to bear any more monsters or giants. She and Cronus planned the overthrow of Uranus so with the help of Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, and Iapetus, they held Uranus while Cronus cut off his testicles and threw them in the ocean. It is said that when his blood hit the earth, more monsters were born. Cyclops was one of the giants which Gaea gave birth to. When the testicles hit the water a big foam rose up and from this came Aphrodite. There were also nymphs born to them. It is believed that Coeus was the Titan pillar of the north pole. His name is sometimes referred to as Polo, meaning , of the northern pole. His brothers, Hyperion, Krios, and Iapetos, were the pillars of the East West, and South. Coeus’ wife presided over the oracles of the axis of earth Delphi, a common inherited by their grandson Apollon.
Coeus was the god who had the inquisitive mind. His wife Phoebe (or Phoibe), was the goddess of the prophetic mind. Together they might have worked together as the front of all knowledge. Krios was son of Heaven, and Phoebe daughter of Earth. They were both born of Heaven bur derived from Earth. The daughters of Coeus were thought to have represented the two main branches of prophesy, Leto and her son, Apollon, watched over the prophetic power of light and Heaven, and Asteria and her daughter, Hekate, presided over the prophetic power of night, darkness, and ghosts of the dead.It is believed that because Coeus’ name appears in the list of Giantes sometimes, that it suggests that he may have played a part in the Gigantomakhia, or otherwise known as the war of the Giantes.
