Ancient Greek Mythology continued
There is a lot of interest in Ancient Greek mythology. There are also many interesting stories about the Ancient Greek gods and goddesses and there are several different versions of some of the stories. Many of the Greek gods and goddesses are also worshiped in other countries although the names may be changed. The Greek mythology is one of the very earliest information about the creation of the universe. The myths are made up beliefs and names of gods and goddesses that the Greek feel was how everything came to be. The Ancient Greeks felt that there had to be something more powerful than they were who could create the world and everything that was in it and around it. So they created names of Greek gods and goddesses for each of the things that makes the world go round. There were major gods and many helper gods as well as some mortals which became immortal because of their heroism and deeds they performed for the gods.
According to the Ancient Greeks, in the beginning there was only Chaos. Chaos was a dark abyss like nothing which contained no sound, life form, or shape. Chaos created Eros (Desire), the Earth (also known as Gaea, Gaia, Mother earth, and Ge).Chaos also created Uranus (also known as the Sky, Ouranos, or the heavens). Gaea gave birth to the Mountains, and the Sea (Pontus) by herself. Then she united with Uranus and together they gave birth to the 12 Titans, the 3 Cyclopes, and the 3 Hecatonchires. There were s female and six male Titans and their names were, Coeus and Phoebe (married), Crius and Mnemosyne (married), Hyperion and Theia (married), Oceanus and Tethys (married), and Cronus and Rhea (married). Lapetus married a nympn called Clymene (who was the daughter of Oceanus and Tethys), and Themis didn’t marry because she was seduced by Zeus, her nephew.
As the story goes, Uranus was ashamed of his children that he had with Gaea. One story says he was maybe afraid of them. Another story says that Gaea feared for her children so she hid them in a cave inside herself. She tried to convince her children to help her destroy Uranus but the only one who volunteered to help her was Cronus because he wanted to overthrow Uranus and become the ruler of all of the gods and humans. Gaea made a sickle for Cronus and when Uranus came to lay with Gaea, Cronus castrated him.
Years later, Zeus and the Olympians overthrew Cronus and the Titans and Zeus became the ruler of all gods and humans. It seems that Cronus had swallowed all of his children when they were born except for Zeus. Rhea (Cronus’ wife and Zeus’ mother) hid Zeus when he was born and made Cronus regurgitate and bring up the other children. When the children were grown they fought against Cronus and the other Titans.
