Ancient Greek Art

Ancient Greek art is very beautiful and rich. The homes were initially made from wood, mud brick, or clay. Most of the ancient Greek architecture is not there anymore from the 8th to the 6th B. C. Era. The only thing left of the history of this architecture are some ground plans. No written sources of these buildings are available.

There have been many countries which have replicated the Greeks and their art is displayed all over the world in one form or another. One of their most popular art forms was in their architecture. The architecture of the Greeks is one of the most beautiful of all that in the world. Their buildings were made from wood, unbaked brick, limestone, and marble. The wood was used for beams to hold up the roof and for supports. The limestone and marble was used for columns and the upper parts of the temples and public buildings. Tera cotta was used for the roof tiles and ornaments. There were also metals, such as bronze, used to decorate the structures. And as usual, the richer the occupant, the more decorated the structures were. These materials were used to build the 5 types of buildings in Greece. The styles were religious, civic, domestic, funerary, and recreational buildings.

Somewhere around 600 B. C. The wooden columns of the Temple of Hera were reconstructed and this time they used stone to replace the wooden ones. The entire Temple was renovated and when it was finished, the entire building was made of stone. After that other buildings were also restructured. From then on any new buildings were built of stone. When the stone walls were introduced, the heavy roof tiles also replaced the thatched roofs.

Other Greek art was the paintings on vases and urns as well as the bronze statues and busts. There were many of these made in ancient Greece but not many have survived the centuries. There are a few pieces which can be viewed in museums. A quick online search can give you the names of the museums where they can be found. The statues, paintings, and busts were of the ancient Greek gods and goddesses which were, and in some cases still are, worshiped. There were also sacrifices made to these gods and goddesses. There have been many replicas of the ancient Greek art manufactured so there is some for anyone who is interested in that part of the world. Ancient Greek art was used for everyday purposes. The statues and busts were idolized and the urns and vases were used for utilitarian purposes. Today the replicas are used to decorate homes and buisnesses.
